Antiseptics and Disinfectants

Antiseptic are the chemicals that are used on living body to kill germs. As these substances are used on sensitive organ like skin therefore, to reduce harmful effect, these chemicals are used in mild quantities. Some examples of antiseptic are Lysol, carbolic acid, iodine, benzoic acid, mercurochrome, boric acid etc. These chemicals are used in dilute form.

Disinfectant are the chemical substances that are applied on spots and places where germs survive and multiply. As these chemicals are used on non living surfaces, therefore, the concentration of chemical used is more.

Some examples of disinfectant are cresol, phenol, lysol, 40 % formalin, lime, bordeaux mixture, DDT, etc.

Rather than using chemicals we can also go for methods like boiling and strong heat wherever possible. Strong heat and boiling also destroy germs and may be called physical disinfectants.

Precautions :

  • All disinfectants are strong and should be used carefully.
  • If due to any reason  a person comes in contact with the disinfectant ,then he/ she should immediately take doctor help.
